Windows 11 Introduces the Option to Disable the Copilot Key

Windows 11 is testing a new feature that allows users to reassign the Copilot key to do nothing—literally. This change reflects MS’s response to user feedback regarding the controversial Copilot key.

The History of the Copilot Key

Since 2024, newer Windows PCs have been equipped with a dedicated Copilot key, which MS insists is essential for defining a PC as an AI PC. However, this requirement has faced criticism, as it dismisses otherwise capable PCs without the key.

Despite MS’s vision, the Copilot key has largely become a meme in the tech community. Even users who embrace AI agents often find themselves ignoring the key altogether. Faced with this reality, MS has decided to offer a compromise: allow users to remap the key or disable it entirely.

The "Do Nothing" Option

MS has recently introduced a new option in Windows Insider preview builds: “Do nothing.” As spotted by MS watcher PhantomOfEarth, this option ensures that pressing or holding the Copilot key will have no effect. Essentially, this functions as a kill switch for the Copilot key, leaving users free to repurpose the key or cover it with a sticker if they choose.

In addition to the "Do nothing" option, MS has confirmed that users will also be able to reassign the Copilot key to applications such as ChatGPT or Claude, or revert it to serve as the Right Ctrl key. These customization options can be accessed via Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Keyboard.

Challenges and User Feedback

MS acknowledges that the introduction of the Copilot key has created challenges for some users. In a document published earlier this year, the company noted that users who relied on the Right Ctrl key or the Context menu key—particularly those utilizing keyboard shortcuts or assistive technologies—faced disruptions to their workflows.

“Customers who rely on the Right Ctrl key or Context menu key for keyboard shortcuts or assistive technologies (such as screen readers) experienced some challenges to their workflows when using these devices,” MS stated.

While the Copilot key will continue to be included in new PCs, MS’s decision to allow greater customization aims to address these concerns.

Expanded Customization Options

Initially, MS planned to offer only two remapping options: converting the Copilot key to the Right Ctrl key or the Context menu key. However, the company later decided to include a third option—“Do nothing”—which is now being tested in preview builds.

Considerations When Remapping the Copilot Key

MS has issued a warning for users who remap the Copilot key to the Right Ctrl key. On some keyboards, certain shortcuts involving the physical Left Shift key and the Right Ctrl key may not work consistently. To avoid issues, MS recommends using the physical Right Shift key for those particular shortcuts.

The company remains optimistic that these changes will enhance both consistency and accessibility across Windows devices. “MS continues to work toward consistent and accessible experiences across Windows devices while minimizing disruption to productivity and accessibility workflows,” the company noted.

Looking Ahead

Although the feature is still in preview, it is expected to roll out to the public within the next few weeks. MS has emphasized its commitment to providing users with greater control over the Copilot key sooner rather than later.
