MS Fixes All but One Windows 11 2026 Update Bug, With the Last One Mitigated

Time: Nov, 4, 2026

Windows 11 26H2 Is Now MS’s Recommended Version, With Four of Five Known Issues Fixed

Windows 11 26H2 is now MS’s recommended version, as four of its five known issues are fixed

For everyone still using last year’s OS version, MS’s Windows 11 25H2 status page now states, “We recommend updating to version 26H2 to stay up to date, secure, and productive.” On the 26H2 status page, four of the five tracked known issues are now marked as resolved. The remaining USB audio bug is listed as mitigated.

The recommendation follows a difficult couple of months. Windows 11 26H2 rolled out on September 29, just weeks after the September update broke multiple features, and it launched with three known issues already active. A month later, Windows 11 is in much better shape, including in terms of performance.

Updated to Windows 11 26H2

MS Has Fixed Four of Windows 11 26H2’s Five Known Issues

The September 8 update, KB5124008, broke Remote Desktop sessions, caused File Explorer to crash, and quietly stopped File History backups while displaying a false and unusual “Reconnect your drive” warning. MS explained the Explorer crashes by saying, “The September Windows updates were extensive.” That is certainly one way to describe them.

MS needed four updates to eliminate the bug, beginning with the emergency KB5129195 patch on September 14. In our testing, File History backups began working again with the October 2026 Patch Tuesday update, and the final fix arrived on October 28 with KB5127936. The current 26H2 status page shows that four of the five tracked issues have been resolved.

USB Audio Is the Only Windows 11 26H2 Bug MS Has Not Fixed

“After installing Windows 11, version 26H2, some USB Audio Class 1.0 devices might fail to start or produce audio,” MS says. Affected devices may display a Code 10 error, produce no sound, or cause volume controls and sound settings to become unresponsive. USB Audio Class 1.0 is an older, driverless standard still used by many USB headsets, microphones, and DACs.

MS’s September 14 emergency update fixed the 8-channel and 3D audio symptoms, so the company classifies the bug as mitigated rather than resolved. For the remaining symptoms, MS says, “We are working to address this issue in a future Windows update and will provide more information when it is available.” The entry has not been updated since September 29.

Skipping Windows 11 26H2 will not protect you from this issue. MS lists the bug on every Windows 11 version from 23H2 onward, Windows 10 22H2, and even Windows Server 2012.

Skipping Windows 11 26H2 Will Not Prevent Bugs, and Delaying Updates Is Riskier Than Ever

Windows 11 26H2 is not a new operating system. MS’s enablement package documentation states, “Windows 11, versions 24H2, 25H2, and 26H2 share a common core operating system with an identical set of system files,” while the new features “remain dormant until they are turned on.” This is why the upgrade requires only a single restart and why a bug in one version usually appears in all three, as MS explained when Windows 11 26H2 launched.

I would not delay monthly updates, either. In September, MS 365 director Jeremy Chapman said MS had reduced its recommended deployment window for Windows updates to “less than three days,” because any longer provides “ample time for attackers using AI to find and exploit known security gaps.” October’s Patch Tuesday fixed a record 1,413 vulnerabilities, including a Windows Shell flaw that attackers were already exploiting. Support for Windows 11 24H2 Home and Pro ended on October 13, so upgrading is no longer optional for those editions.

There is also a performance incentive. MS’s latest improvements for PCs with 8GB of RAM, which can make Windows up to 20% more responsive on those systems, require Windows 11 26H2 build 26300.9818 or later. After I updated my own 16GB laptop to 26H2, RAM usage following a restart fell by as much as 2GB. My dad’s 8GB laptop dropped from 5GB to 3.3GB. The performance benefits alone make upgrading to 26H2 worthwhile.

To upgrade, open Settings > Windows Update and select Check for updates. MS says, “If Windows 11, version 26H2 is available for your device, select Download & install.”

Windows 11 26H2 Is Ready for Most People

I have been using Windows 11 26H2 since early October, and the operating system now feels better than it has in a long time. MS deserves credit for resolving most of September’s problems in approximately seven weeks.

However, “recommended” does not mean bug-free. If your USB headset or DAC is experiencing problems, MS is still working on a fix. Have you upgraded to Windows 11 26H2 yet?
