Shuhei Yoshida Says Ex-CEO Jim Ryan Forced Him to Leave His Position as President

PlayStation veteran Shuhei Yoshida recently revealed during a presentation that he was removed from his role as President due to disagreements with former Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO Jim Ryan. After departing PlayStation last year—concluding a 31-year tenure—Yoshida has spoken candidly about the complexities of his final years with the company.

Yoshida joined Sony in 1986, initially working in its PC division, and later became one of the original team members involved in the development of the PlayStation console. This launched a distinguished career as a producer on landmark titles including Gran Turismo, Crash Bandicoot, Spyro the Dragon, and Ape Escape. From 2008 to 2019, he served as President of Sony Interactive Entertainment Worldwide Studios. He then transitioned to lead PlayStation Indies—a role he held until his retirement in 2025. However, Yoshida clarified that stepping down from the Worldwide Studios presidency was not his own decision.

During a keynote address at the ALT: GAMES festival in Australia, Yoshida disclosed that his move to PlayStation Indies followed a directive from Jim Ryan, who effectively presented him with no alternative. While Yoshida had previously alluded to the involuntary nature of his departure, his remarks at ALT: GAMES represent some of his most direct and unambiguous commentary on the matter. Although Ryan departed Sony in 2024, Yoshida stated that their fundamental disagreement stemmed from the fact that, “I didn’t listen to him.”

According to Yoshida, Ryan offered him a binary choice: either leave the company or assume leadership of PlayStation Indies. Despite being effectively removed from his presidential role, Yoshida emphasized that he found his work with PlayStation Indies deeply rewarding. Attendees reported that he delivered his remarks in good spirits and with characteristic candor. When pressed for specifics, Yoshida remarked that Ryan asked him “to do some ridiculous things,” though he declined to elaborate. Speculation suggests these requests may have related to strategic shifts in how new PlayStation games—particularly those aligned with evolving business models—were being developed and managed.

Jim Ryan Was a Big Fan of the Live-Service Model

In recent years, Sony has actively pursued live-service game development. While titles such as Helldivers 2 and Marathon have demonstrated successful execution of this model, others—including the canceled Concord—highlight its inconsistent outcomes. Though Sony remains committed to premium single-player narrative experiences, expanding into live-service initiatives was a clear strategic priority under Jim Ryan’s leadership.

Several live-service projects initiated during Ryan’s tenure have since been canceled, including The Last of Us Online, a live-service spin-off of God of War, and a Twisted Metal reboot. While Yoshida did not explicitly link his “ridiculous” requests to Sony’s live-service pivot, the timing and context make it a plausible interpretation. Notably, Yoshida spoke warmly of his stewardship over critically acclaimed, story-driven franchises such as God of War, Uncharted, The Last of Us, and Ghost of Tsushima. Though no longer with the company, his leadership played a pivotal role in shaping many of PlayStation’s most celebrated exclusives.
