Roblox’s Age Verification Rollout: Balancing Safety, Scale, and Community Trust
Roblox’s Chief Safety Officer Matt Kaufman has publicly addressed growing concerns about the platform’s expanded age verification requirements, acknowledging their unpopularity while emphasizing the strategic necessity: “We understand it’s unpopular, but the cost of not acting is greater than the friction of acting.”
Phased Implementation of Age Checks and Account Tiers
Over recent months, Roblox has progressively introduced age-related safeguards:
- Facial age estimation via device camera became mandatory for users accessing the in-platform chat function.
- Earlier this month, the company announced a broader rollout—including new account tiers: Kids accounts (for ages 5–8) and Select accounts (for ages 9–15).
- New publishing requirements now apply to all content creators on the platform.
Revised Publishing Requirements by Audience Tier
To publish content accessible to all ages, creators must now meet four criteria:
- Complete ID-based age verification;
- Enable two-factor authentication (2FA);
- Maintain an active Roblox Plus subscription ($4.99/month);
- Submit games for a new evaluation process.
Note: Roblox stated it will cover the cost of Roblox Plus for approximately 100,000 existing creators over the next six months.
For content targeted at users aged 16 and over (or shared exclusively with Trusted Friends), creators must still complete an age check—but may use facial age estimation instead of formal ID verification.
Rationale: Safety, Trust, and Global Accessibility
These measures aim to ensure game content is appropriate for Roblox’s youngest users. As Kaufman explained during a recent Ask Me Anything (AMA) session:
“Our job as a platform is to balance the needs of every part of our community—players, parents, creators, and influencers. We’ve heard loudly from parents and policymakers that they need stronger assurances about the content available to our youngest users, and we take that just as seriously as we take feedback from creators and influencers.”
He further noted the dual challenge of preserving creative freedom while ensuring age-appropriateness: “How do we balance that freedom of creativity and the joy that comes with building really anything—with making sure that the content accessible to our youngest users and young teens is age-appropriate?”
The Strategic Imperative Behind Age Checks
Kaufman reiterated the non-negotiable stakes:
“On age checks specifically: we understand it’s unpopular. But the honest reality is that the cost of not acting is greater than the friction of acting. Without these requirements, Roblox risks losing access in entire regions—which means fewer players, smaller audiences, and less opportunity for every creator and influencer building on this platform. Some Roblox everywhere is better than full Roblox nowhere.”
He concluded by framing Roblox’s evolution: “Roblox today is not the platform it was five, ten, almost twenty years ago. There are more responsibilities that come with our scale, yes—but there are also exponentially more opportunities to build a real business, reach a global audience, and access more powerful tools than ever before.”
Broader Industry Context: Discord and the Rise of Age Assurance
Roblox’s moves reflect a wider trend. Globally, platforms are adopting stricter age assurance protocols. For example:
- Discord plans to roll out its controversial “age assurance” update globally in the second half of the year—locking features like adult-content access behind verification.
- Notably, Discord claims many adult users may be exempt from manual verification, as its system uses an AI model analyzing patterns of user behavior to estimate age.
Despite such technical accommodations, age verification initiatives remain inherently contentious. As Kaufman’s remarks underscore—and as Discord’s experience confirms—such announcements rarely proceed without backlash. Yet for platforms operating at global scale, regulatory compliance, parental trust, and long-term accessibility increasingly demand proactive, structured safeguards.
