Key Human Traits for Workplace Success in the Age of AI
As artificial intelligence continues to disrupt the workplace, there are two critical human traits that every employee needs to succeed, according to Jennie Rogerson, Canva’s Chief People Officer.
The Two Essential Traits
Speaking at Charter’s New Employer Brand Summit held last week in New York City, Rogerson emphasized the importance of curiosity as a foundational trait. “Curiosity is a baseline,” she stated.
Beyond curiosity, Rogerson highlighted the importance of the ability to “go the extra mile” by taking initiative and assuming responsibility beyond one’s defined job description. In practical terms, this could involve pursuing advanced certifications in your field or integrating soft skills into the workplace.
Industry Experts Weigh In
Rogerson’s perspective resonates with career coaches and industry experts, who agree on the significance of these traits, especially as AI continues to rise.
“The biggest shift I’m seeing is that technical skills are no longer enough to future-proof your career,” says Caroline Hickey, a London-based career coach, in an interview with Fast Company. “Curiosity is a deeply human trait that gives us control over our careers, and it’s something we can all do. That is what makes it one of our human superpowers in a world shifting to AI.”
Embracing Curiosity
Hickey, who specializes in helping young professionals navigate the evolving workplace, suggests that one of the simplest ways to cultivate curiosity is by becoming comfortable with asking “why?”—even with a small “w.”
“When a project fails, you get rejected from a job, or a client gives you negative feedback, the courage to be curious allows you to pause, understand the root cause, and pivot,” Hickey explains. She emphasizes that this mindset can help individuals turn every digital disruption into an opportunity to learn, adapt, and succeed—both now and in the future.
