Adobe Integrates Creative Tools into ChatGPT Plug-in

Adobe has combined over 70 of its creative and productivity tools—including Photoshop, Premiere, Express, Acrobat, Firefly, Illustrator, and InDesign—into a single plug-in that operates within ChatGPT. Users can describe their desired outputs in plain language, and the AI generates photos, videos, social media posts, and PDFs based on those requests.

A Seamless and Magical User Experience

While the functionality is undeniably useful and intuitive, the most remarkable aspect may be the unexpected and delightful results generated by ChatGPT. Forest Key, Vice President of Adobe Firefly and Agentic AI at Adobe, elaborates: “You get very unpredictable, delightful, magical things happen.”

What Key means is that ChatGPT autonomously decides how to leverage Adobe’s tools, often combining them in unscripted and creative ways. While the tools themselves are Adobe’s, the intelligence guiding their use is ChatGPT’s. The AI interprets the user’s request and processes it based on its accumulated knowledge and past interactions with that user.

The Role of OpenAI’s Language Model

Think of OpenAI’s large language model (LLM) as an interpreter that communicates with Adobe’s backend. This interpreter uniquely understands commands, shaped by its own idiosyncrasies and memory of prior interactions. Key shares an example: earlier that day, he uploaded photos of his Asterix comic collection to ChatGPT. “So my ChatGPT session has some awareness of my Asterix collection that may come back in some future conversation,” he explains. This personalization adds depth to the interaction.

Global Availability and Comprehensive Toolset

The plug-in is now available globally on ChatGPT’s web and mobile apps, as well as ChatGPT Work and Codex. It consolidates previously separate ChatGPT integrations for Adobe’s tools, including Express, Photoshop, Firefly, Premiere, Acrobat, Lightroom, Illustrator, InDesign, and Stock, into one unified installation. “So this is…the largest combination in one central place,” Key states.

With a single installation, users can:

• Restyle an entire photo set to maintain a consistent aesthetic
• Cut long videos into Reels and Shorts
• Customize design templates
• Transform spreadsheets into event badges, catalogs, and infographics

How It Works

To use the plug-in, simply add it to ChatGPT and type @Adobe in a chat, followed by a description of the desired output. ChatGPT selects the necessary tools and orchestrates their functionality in the background, delivering a range of outputs.

Editable Outputs for Fine-Tuned Control

All outputs are fully editable. As Key explains: “It’s kind of like a progressive disclosure of more fine control. You can stay at a very high level with semantic and language or just chat, and then you can start to have little controls that appear that you start to modify.”

For example:

• Express templates allow layout adjustments directly within the chat interface.
• For pixel-level precision, files can be exported into Adobe’s full-featured apps, such as Photoshop.
• Users can batch-edit product shots in ChatGPT and then refine the hero image in Photoshop using layers and masks.

As Key highlights, “You can continue the work in Photoshop, continue the work in Express, continue the work in Acrobat.” This seamless integration allows users to move between ChatGPT and Adobe’s applications with ease, enabling both high-level automation and detailed manual adjustments.
