Bella Ramsey Speaks on Neil Druckmann’s Exit from The Last of Us TV Series
Bella Ramsey has shared her thoughts on Neil Druckmann’s exit from HBO’s The Last of Us series, emphasizing that the show remains dedicated to preserving the core essence and legacy of the original game—even as Druckmann steps away from an active role.
“The world of The Last of Us is his creation—as are his voice and creative contributions. Those don’t just disappear in Season 3 because he’s no longer as actively involved. It will always be his creation,” Ramsey told Variety. “And in everything we do, we’re constantly paying tribute to the game and Neil’s vision. He’ll definitely be missed on set—but his presence is in the story.”
Druckmann’s Departure and Future Plans
Earlier this month, Druckmann revealed his decision to step back, explaining that he will be focusing on writing and directing Naughty Dog’s next project: Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet. He described co-developing the HBO series as a “career-defining moment” and expressed his gratitude for working alongside co-creator Craig Mazin. Mazin, on the other hand, will continue spearheading the series into its third season—which may also potentially serve as the show’s finale.
Season 3 Progress and Narrative Direction
Development for Season 3 is currently underway, though a release date has not yet been confirmed. The season will focus on Abby’s story. When asked about Ellie’s role, Ramsey responded: “I have an idea, but I’m afraid I can’t share any details with you.”
HBO has tentatively slated Season 3 for a 2027 release. Nevertheless, the season’s final format remains undecided. As HBO Chairman and CEO Casey Bloys noted: “Craig is still figuring out whether it will be two more seasons or one extended season. Nothing has been finalized yet, and I’m following Craig’s direction on this.”
Accolades and Recognition
The Last of Us Season 2 recently garnered 16 Emmy nominations, including a nod for Outstanding Drama Series. With the first season’s 24 nominations, the series has now achieved a total of 40 Emmy nominations across its first two seasons.
