EA's Struggles to Understand Dragon Age: Insights from a Former BioWare Producer

According to a former BioWare producer, EA never truly understood the appeal of the Dragon Age series or why players were drawn to the fantasy RPG franchise. This disconnect likely contributed to years of corporate interference, culminating in the troubled development and release of Dragon Age: The Veilguard.

EA's Misunderstanding of the Franchise

Ex-BioWare producer Mark Darrah, who played a significant role in the development of classics like Baldur's Gate, the Dragon Age series, and Anthem, recently shed light on the challenges faced by the beloved but often turbulent franchise in an interview with FRVR. Darrah noted that EA consistently struggled to grasp Dragon Age’s appeal, particularly when compared to its sci-fi counterpart, Mass Effect.

"I think you see it in the way that EA interacted with the two franchises," Darrah explains. "If you are not someone who plays CRPGs, it's very hard to look at a game like Dragon Age or Baldur's Gate 1 and 2 and understand why anyone would want to play this nerdy piece of garbage. Whereas with Mass Effect, they could look at it and think, 'OK, it's a Star Wars game.' Even if that was a bit too nerdy for them, it was at least comprehensible."

Dragon Age's Niche Appeal vs. Mass Effect's Accessibility

Dragon Age: Origins, released in 2008, was already in development when EA acquired BioWare. However, after the acquisition, EA reportedly viewed the series as "too niche, too backwards, too old-school." In contrast, Mass Effect, with its action-oriented gameplay and cover-based shooting, bore a resemblance to popular titles like Gears of War, making it more palatable to EA executives.

Dragon Age’s high fantasy world, rife with intricate politics and a blend of real-time action and CRPG tactics, was a harder sell for EA. Darrah explains, "You can blame some of the perpetual flux within the Dragon Age series on EA's pressure. They didn’t understand why anyone would want to buy this hardcore, tactical thing."

The Troubled Development of Dragon Age: The Veilguard

Although Mark Darrah was no longer at BioWare during the development of Dragon Age: The Veilguard, EA’s misunderstanding of the franchise seemingly influenced that game's production as well. Initially conceived as a smaller-scale, story-focused RPG, the project was paused and later reimagined as a live-service multiplayer game. Eventually, it was rebooted yet again into the version that was released as The Veilguard.

Despite these efforts, the game failed to meet EA's sales expectations, leading to layoffs at the storied studio shortly after its launch.

The Future of Dragon Age

Former Dragon Age lead David Gaider has expressed pessimism about the series continuing under EA. Describing the franchise as "unlikely" to move forward, Gaider remarked that if he had the opportunity to lead the RPG again, he would take it in a "dark" direction, aiming to "do things that will make people upset."

For now, the future of Dragon Age remains uncertain, with its legacy marred by years of corporate missteps and missed opportunities.
