Turning a Hobby into a Career: The Success Story of Hamma Studios
Game development is not typically a career path where many make a fortune. In fact, most developers are fortunate if they manage to recover the monetary costs of their projects. However, exceptional cases do exist, such as the inspiring story of the solo developer behind Dwarves: Glory, Death and Loot.
From Hobbyist Beginnings to Commercial Success
The developer, operating under the name Hamma Studios, recently shared their journey in a Reddit thread commemorating the four-year anniversary of a pivotal moment in their career. Back in July 2022, they noticed a surge of interest in the demo for what would later become Dwarves, hosted on Itch.io. The demo was played over 1,000 times in a short period, sparking their motivation to continue development. At the time, they were still a hobbyist developer and uncertain about the game's future updates.
Fast forward four years, and that initial prototype has transformed into a full-fledged game. Now, Dwarves: Glory, Death and Loot has sold over 300,000 copies, completely reshaping the developer’s life and career.
Major Milestones and Platforms
"That prototype became Dwarves: Glory, Death and Loot and has now sold 300,000+ copies, completely changing my life," the developer wrote. "The most important part is to just never give up." These sales were achieved across multiple platforms, including Steam, Nintendo Switch, Android, and iOS.
The full version of the game, an auto-battler strategy RPG, launched on Steam in January this year. According to SteamDB, over half of the 300,000 copies were sold on Steam, with more than 80% of reviews being positive. A quick look at Steam Charts shows an all-time high of 5,195 concurrent players for the game—an impressive feat for a single-player release developed by one person.
Financial Realities of Indie Development
Despite these achievements, the developer remains grounded about their financial situation. In the Reddit thread, they noted that while "cuts and taxes" mean they aren’t quite a millionaire, they are still in a good financial position. "I get to live comfortably as a full-time game developer (at least for a few years)," they shared.
In a follow-up comment, they broke down the financial realities of game development. For example, $1 million in gross revenue on Steam could theoretically result in only $185,000 in take-home pay after deductions for platform fees, publishing costs, taxes, and other expenses. One significant deduction they highlighted was a 40% cut for an imagined publisher. In the case of Dwarves, Sidekick Publishing and Gamersky Games co-published the game, though the exact terms of their arrangement remain unclear.
While this may seem like a substantial share, the partnership likely relieved the developer of considerable administrative, PR, marketing, and other responsibilities, allowing them to focus on the creative aspects of the game.
A Beacon of Hope in Challenging Times
Ultimately, this story serves as a testament to perseverance and passion in the game development industry. It is a hopeful anecdote, particularly during a time when many developers face significant challenges in a rapidly evolving industry. As Hamma Studios demonstrates, chasing your dreams can lead to incredible and unexpected outcomes.
