Microsoft Expands PlayStation Portfolio with Age of Empires and Age of Mythology Ports
Microsoft is continuing its efforts to bring its popular franchises to PlayStation, announcing that both Age of Empires 2: Definitive Edition and Age of Mythology: Retold will be available to PS5 players in just a few months.
Details on the Release
Series developer World’s Edge revealed the PlayStation versions in a blog post on its website, outlining plans to expand the reach of these iconic strategy games. These ports will include content parity and crossplay compatibility, ensuring players across all platforms have a unified experience.
“Playing across all platforms is a game-changer for our franchise, and it’s all about bringing our community together,” World’s Edge stated. “This isn’t just about convenience — it’s about growing and strengthening the Age community. With crossplay, we’re creating one global battlefield where every strategy, every empire, and every player matters.”
Key Release Dates and Features
- Age of Mythology: Retold: Launching on PS5 on March 4, 2025, alongside the Immortal Pillars expansion. A Premium Edition will be available for early access starting on February 27, 2025, granting five-day early play and two exclusive Blessings for the Arena of the Gods mode.

Microsoft’s Strategy of Multi-Platform Releases
Age of Empires 2 and Age of Mythology are the latest Microsoft titles to make their way to rival consoles. This shift began last year when Microsoft announced plans to release more of its first-party games on additional platforms. Titles such as Sea of Thieves, Grounded, Pentiment, and Hi-Fi Rush have already expanded their reach, a trend that continued with the announcement of Indiana Jones and the Great Circle for PlayStation in spring 2025. Most recently, Microsoft confirmed Forza Horizon 5’s PlayStation debut.
Microsoft has confirmed that future updates for Age of Empires 2 and Age of Mythology will launch simultaneously on PC, Xbox, and PlayStation platforms. The franchise has amassed a global player base of 60 million, according to World’s Edge.
Future Content Updates
While it’s unclear whether other entries in the series will make their way to PlayStation, fans of the franchise have more to look forward to:
- Age of Empires 4: Set to receive two DLCs in 2025, including the Knights of Cross and Rose expansion in the spring.
- Age of Empires Mobile: New features and events are coming this month, such as the Battle of Dawn campaign, the Stellar Glory event, and Valentine’s Day cosmetics.
These updates underscore Microsoft’s commitment to growing the Age of Empires franchise across platforms and expanding its global community.
