Microsoft Confirms Live-Action Adaptation of Sea of Thieves
Microsoft is in the process of developing a live-action movie adaptation of Rare's popular pirate adventure game, Sea of Thieves.
Production Details and Key Personnel
Xbox head of content Matt Booty confirmed the project in an interview with Entertainment Weekly. The movie will be produced by Destin Daniel Cretton, known for directing Marvel hits such as Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings and the upcoming Spider-Man: Brand New Day. However, Cretton is not expected to direct the adaptation himself.
Adapting the Game's Unique Appeal
Discussing the potential plot, Booty emphasized the game's focus on community and player interaction rather than traditional storytelling. "The main character of a Sea of Thieves game is actually the player and the community," Booty explained. "So if you sit down to think about Sea of Thieves, it's not, 'Who are the main characters? What's the plot?' It's a super social game, but there's a tone to Sea of Thieves. It's built on a very cooperative community, so you can start to sense what that's going to be like."
A Look Back at Sea of Thieves' Growth
Originally released for PC and Xbox One in 2018, Sea of Thieves has maintained its popularity over the years. The game received a current-generation console launch in 2024, expanding its reach by becoming multi-platform and debuting on the PlayStation 5.
British developer Rare has consistently expanded the game's sandbox-style open world. This includes the addition of new areas, gameplay mechanics, story-driven quests, and collaborations such as a crossover with Disney's Pirates of the Caribbean and content inspired by the classic adventure series Monkey Island.
Commitment to Future Content Amid Industry Challenges
Despite looming layoffs across Xbox studios, Rare has expressed its commitment to supporting Sea of Thieves for years to come. The developer has promised future updates, including long-term plans for subscription-funded custom servers. However, this marks the first announcement of a movie adaptation for the game.
Industry Restructuring and Layoff Concerns
Regarding the potential layoffs, reports suggest that multiple studios may face closure or divestment. Entertainment Weekly noted that Xbox leadership is working on finalizing restructuring plans and aims to "exhaust all other options before making these decisions." To date, Microsoft has not issued an official comment on the matter.
